What exactly is a “high-risk scam”?

Guardio has the ability to detect certain types of remote access scams in real-time and alert customers with a phone call and SMS alerts as the scams are taking place.

How do these scams work?

In most cases, these scams will start over the phone or through some kind of online communication like email or chat. The scammer will typically try to convince you that there’s a problem with your computer, a software service, or another online service you may be using. Ultimately, their goal is to get you to install a remote access tool and give them control of your computer. Once this happens, the scammer can easily access your banking accounts, online profiles, and any sensitive information you may have saved in your browser or on your computer.

What Guardio does to protect you

Guardio’s technology detects suspicious activity that may indicate one of these scams. For example, if you go directly from downloading a remote access tool to visiting your online banking site, it could mean that someone is attempting to commit fraud. If you have critical security alerts set up, Guardio will call you immediately and send an SMS notifying you that you may have just been targeted with a high risk scam. The message will tell you to immediately restart your computer and cut off all communication with the scammer. Once you’ve addressed the immediate threat, you can follow our scam recovery steps to make sure your accounts are secure and you’re taking any necessary actions required to protect yourself from fraud.
