Email Protection checks your Gmail inbox for scam emails and flags the ones it finds. It works with Gmail only. It won't check Yahoo, AOL, Outlook, Hotmail or other email inboxes.
You don't need Gmail to use Guardio. You can sign in with any email address, and your other protections work the same.
If you use Yahoo, AOL, Outlook or another email
Here's what still protects you:
- Data-leak alerts: add your address as a monitored email. We'll tell you if it shows up in a data leak. How to add a monitored email
- Browsing protection: if you tap a link in an email and it opens in your browser, Guardio checks that website.
Guardio can't look inside those inboxes, so it won't flag scam emails there. That's why the app may show only a Gmail address under Email Protection. If you don't use Gmail, you can leave that step undone.
Email Protection vs monitored emails
| Â | Email Protection | Monitored emails |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Checks new emails in your inbox for scams | Tells you if the address shows up in a data leak |
| Works with | Gmail only | Any email address |
| What Guardio needs | Access to your Gmail | Just the email address |
Your sign-in email is a third thing: it's the address you use to sign in to Guardio. It can be from any email service.
How to turn it on (Gmail)
- Open the Guardio app.
- Go to the Home tab and tap Complete your setup.
- Tap the email protection step.
- Choose your Gmail account.
- Approve the access Google asks for.
Google asks you to let Guardio read and manage your email. Guardio needs this to check new emails as they arrive and to label the scam emails it finds. When it's done, the app shows Email Protection as on.
What you'll see when Guardio finds a scam email
Depending on your account, you'll see one of these:
- A message from Guardio Security in the same conversation as the scam email, and the scam email filed in a folder called Flagged by Guardio.
- A Guardio label on the scam email in Gmail.
Guardio doesn't delete your emails, and nothing is sent to the sender. Only you can see Guardio's note.
To find the Flagged by Guardio folder:
- Gmail app: tap the menu at the top left and scroll down to Labels.
- Gmail on a computer: look in the left sidebar under Labels.
- Apple Mail or Outlook: look in your folder list under your Gmail account.
If Guardio flagged a good email
Tap I trust this email in Guardio's note. That tells us we got it wrong. If the email isn't in your inbox, open the Flagged by Guardio folder and move it back.
Still getting scam emails?
Guardio won't catch every one. If one got through in Gmail, write to us with the sender's address and the subject line.
Turn it off
Email Protection stops when you remove Guardio's access to your Gmail. You can do that in your Google Account under Security, then Your connections to third-party apps & services.
